Up and Away...

Today, Colette and I finally went to see the movie "UP". I really enjoyed it. We had originally planned to see it with my niece when she came to visit but events transpired in such a way that it didn't actually work out that way. I loved the opening montage between the old man and his wife. I think that is the only time I have ever cried during a kid's animated movie (that I recall anyway - there may have been others). I was so glad that the movie lived up to the hype. So today's favourite thing is the movie "UP".

Today, I went to see a movie*. When I was younger and went to see movies, we never got any popcorn or anything. Now, I usually get some popcorn and a drink. Not just any popcorn. I tend to get the Kid's pack or combo at the movies. I like getting the kid's pack because there is not too much of any one thing. You get a small drink, a small popcorn and a small candy. It may look odd that someone my age gets the kid's pack but I don't really care. For me, they are just right.

* The movie I saw was "The Hangover". It was quite enjoyable, although I read too much about it beforehand, so I knew a bunch of what happened in the movie.

Seems rather early....

This morning, my sister and I went to see "Monsters vs Aliens" at the theatre. I thought it was rather cool that they had movies playing before noon. I quite enjoyed the movie but I kept trying to figure out who was doing the voices. I knew for sure who some of them were but some of the other ones I had absolutely no clue about. Of course, I had to look it up on the IMDB when I got home because otherwise it would drive me absolutely crazy. So, I guess today's favourite thing is trying to figure out who does the voices in animated movies.

If you know where the title quote comes from, you already know the topic of today's post. A couple of weeks ago, with new paycheque in the bank, I bought some of the things I had been wanting but couldn't afford seeing as how I was basically an unemployed bum. One of the things I bought was Baz Luhrman's Red Curtain trilogy. It contains the movies "Strictly Ballroom", "Romeo and Juliet", and "Moulin Rouge". Tonight I watched "Strictly Ballroom" for probably the 7th or 15th time and my sister partially watched it for the first time (she doesn't pay attention so good). I love that movie. It can been overly dramatic and melodramatic and cheesy at time but it is also very entertaining. I think it is where I got my first glimpse of flamenco before I knew what flamenco was. I hadn't seen the movie in a few years so it was nice to watch it again.

I went to the theatrical production of the musical "Nunsense" tonight which I enjoyed rather enjoyed. There's nothing like biblical humour ("Mary Magdalene tarts, they look easy." "And cheap!") I tend to enjoy musicals (both the plays and the movies). Some people get thrown off by people randomly bursting into song, but I am good with that because, quite frankly, I actually do occasionally randomly burst into song. The choreography needs work and I don't have the musical accompaniment, but other than that, I can relate. Some of my favourites include (but aren't limited to): Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog, the Once More With Feeling episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Chicago (both the movie and the play, but mostly the play), White Christmas, Singing in the Rain (other than the whole movie in the movie thing, that was weird), and probably many more.

Christmas movies

I don't watch a lot of the Christmas specials that are aired on TV in the months leading up to Christmas. I love the Grinch so I occasionally watch it if the stars align and I am able to but many of the other ones I can do without. I tend to watch more of the Christmas movies that are not generally aired consistently like Muppet Family Christmas. For the last few years, I have been watching the movie "White Christmas" every year. It has Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney in it. I really enjoy it. I like many of the songs although some of them I still don't understand the relevance of. I didn't get around to watching it til tonight so it felt rather odd watching a Christmas movie after Christmas but it was enjoyable anyway.
