I'm [really enjoying] it!

A couple months ago, my work got four new salads - a new Caesar, a new Garden salad, a Mediterranean, and a Thai. I was planning to try all of them but I actually started off by trying the Thai. I loved it and haven't made it to any of the others. I really enjoy the dressing for it as well as the glaze for the chicken. I don't get it all the time when I work (sometimes we're sold out) but if I know we have some, I will occasionally get it. So today's favourite thing is the new Spicy Thai salad.

Joys of summer...

Today, when I woke up, I found that my sister had left me some fresh garden peas to eat. I love peas when they are just out of the garden. They taste so good. I remember being at my grandparents' farm when I was younger and being asked to shell the peas----I think I ate more peas than actually made it into the bowl to use for dinner. The peas we had today were rather small but they still tasted quite good.

What a way to end the day....

Today, nothing really special happened. I had a weird dream involving a bunch of people wanting to shoot each other and me freaking out. At the end, everyone made up at the end and decided to go to "the Mon-tan". Apparently, they didn't know how to pronounce "Montana". It was an odd, odd dream. I went to work as well but nothing particularly out of the ordinary happened. When I got home though, I found that my sister had bought vanilla ice cream. She bought more strawberries on Sunday so I was able to smoosh them up and put them on the ice cream. It is one of my favourite things ever. It's much more enjoyable for me than strawberry ice cream from the store. We mooshed some strawberries with the chocolate ice cream we had last week but that wasn't quite as enjoyable; possibly because I am not a huge fan of chocolate and fruit together (aside from fondue, and chocolate/banana combinations). So today's favourite thing is eating fresh strawberries on vanilla ice cream.

Sammiches...

Tonight for supper (also known as my breakfast), we had bacon and tomato sandwiches. Every time I have them, I remember how much I like them but I never seem to think of them or make them for myself. They are so easy to make or so I hear (Colette made them yesterday). I mean I've made them before but not recently.

One of the joys of summer....

This afternoon when I woke up there were fresh strawberries ready to be eaten. My sister went and picked them at a U-Pick after church this morning. There is just nothing like really fresh strawberries. She came home with a basketful. I believe, as of the time I started this post, there are not quite enough strawberries to cover the bottom of the basket. Luckily, it was both of us eating them and not just one of us. So today's favourite thing is fresh strawberries.

Another post about food I didn't have to make...

My sister bought rhubarb the other day and spend lots of time trying to find the recipe for rhubarb pie amongst the myriad of recipes in her shelf. She couldn't find it so she got mom to email it to her. She made the pie today, despite a typo in the recipe where it asked for three cups of flour (chopped up) rather than three cups of rhubarb. It was a bit runny but it was still quite good, but then I really like rhubarb pie so I would say that. So today's favourite things is rhubarb pie.

It should be it's own food group...

Ahh..chocolate..what would I do without you? Tonight, my sister really wanted those no-bake chocolate cookies - you know with the oatmeal. If you don't know what I am talking about, all you really need to know is that they are REALLY good. And addictive. She tried hinting at me to make them but I......didn't, so she made them herself. They were really good, as usual. Made even better by the fact that I did not in fact have to make them myself. Thanks Colette!!! So today's favourite thing is the chocolate oatmeal no-bake cookies..you know what I am talking about. They probably have a name but I honestly don't know what it is.

it's greek to me...

Tonight was my night to make supper. I made chicken with feta. Basically, you put chicken breasts on a pan -you may choose to season them or not. Then you mix together feta cheese, tomato, mushrooms, possibly other vegetables, garlic (which I forgot tonight) and some spices. You then put the feta et al on top of the chicken and cook at 350 degress for 45 minutes (or until chicken is cooked thoroughly. I love chicken and feta. I didn't think I was going to like it but I ordered it at a local restaurant in Regina 3 or 4 years ago and absolutely loved it. It was made a bit differently but it was still quite good. Then my sisters started making it at home and it continues to be quite enjoyable.

Cool treats

Today, my sister and I went to Dairy Queen. We were going to go on yesterday in celebration of her birthday (Happy Birthday, Colette!), but after supper we were just too full and we wanted to actually be able to enjoy the DQ We both tried the new Midnight Truffle Blizzard which was quite good. It has three of the things I like the most in the world: chocolate, more chocolate and ice cream. I usually get the Chocolate Extreme blizzard when I go to Dairy Queen, but decided to try the new one this time. Today's favourite things is Blizzards from Dairy Queen.

I don't think they're from California but I enjoy them anyway.

Lately, I've found myself eating a lot of raisins. They aren't something I would usually think of when I think of my favourite foods but I have really been enjying them lately. Possibly because they are quite small and relatively healthy. I am not a huge fan of them in things but just as a snack food, they are nice. I can go for long periods of time without eating them, but once I start, I can't seem to stop.

"Many's the long night I've dreamed of cheese - toasted, mostly.”

Today, I came to the rather late realization that I love cheese. I knew I like it for a while but I didn't realize the depths of my feeling for it until today. I like a number of different types of cheeses. I also love both toasted/melted cheese. I like cheese buns as well but I prefer the homemade ones more because they seem less salty or something.

Why is homemade stuff so much better?

I never really was much of a hummus eater until last year really. I had tried it but I didn't really care about it one way or the other. Then I tried the hummus, my sister Kathleen makes and I loved it. It is pretty much my favourite but I don't know if it's because it's the only stuff we ever really have or if it's actually that good. Today after dinner, my sister Colette and I still were a bit peckish so we had some of the hummus she had made last week with some of the bought pitas we had in the freezer (It was quite the sacrifice after eating the homemade ones last week). The hummus was what made the pitas worth eating. It was very good. If you are interested, the recipe is conveniently on Colette's blog.

"Work"ing it out

As I had previously feared, this blog is spending far to much time on food related topics. Today's post is only going to exascerbate the problem. Anyway, today my sister and I went to a local restaurant called "The Works." It's pretty cool. Its main dish is burgers but it has quite a variety. Basically, you choose the type of patty you want (chicken, hamburger, veggie, etc) and then you choose the type of topping. Some of the titles of the toppings and descriptions (often referring to topical Canadian/Ottawan people or events) are quite amusing so I've been known to giggle once or twice while reading the menu. I usually get the 'Greek Goddess' because it's quite good and there are so many different options that I get a bit overwhelmed. There are about five locations throughout Ottawa and I believe, at this point, I've been to about three of them.

Food again...

The hardest part of writing this blog some days is coming up with the titles. The rest of the blog I am fine with even if I am writing about something pretty routine. Anyway.....Today, my sister and I went to Kelsey's for supper. We don't often get appetizers when we eat out, but we do when we go to Kelsey's because we love the Kelsey's Spinach Dip. I haven't had many varieties of spinach dip in my life, so I don't know if it's the absolute best, but it's pretty darn good so that's good enough for me. We always tend to eat all of the pita things before the dip is all gone, but they are pretty good about bringing you extra, especially if you discuss how you would like more as your server passes by. I guess you could actually ask for more directly, but being offered it just seems like more of a win.

Not my usual but nice.

Today was kinda a "Meh" day. Nothing really bad happened but nothing happened that was so over the top amazing that it automatically popped into my head as something I absolutely must write about or forever hold my peace. However, something that I did enjoy today was what I had for lunch. It was a sandwich but it is not the type of sandwich that I would typically make for myself. It was a feta cheese and tomato sandwich. I am not a huge fan of feta in and off itself. I like feta in stuff (Feta chicken is awesome) but not such a big part of it. I am also not a huge fan of tomatoes. I like them but not in large amounts. I especially don't like cherry or grape tomates (my reasoning there is odd so I'll skip it). But this sandwich was really good. It was in a baguette and the feta was toasted on the baguette before the tomato was added. I was sceptical the first time I had it but I really do enjoy the sandwich.

Even if they don't have chocolate chips.

Today's post is food related once again. I was having trouble coming up with something after a day full of laundry-doing, clothes-moving, table-building and general "productivity". Then my sister handed me a pumpkin muffin. All my worries disappeared about a blog entry disappeared. The muffin was quite enjoyable and it made me happy, so what more can you want? About four more actually. I also like the pumpkin muffins that contain chocolate chips (which these did not but I won't hold that against them). And yes, Colette, there are still some left (depending on what time you are reading this).

“Good apple pies are a considerable part of our domestic happiness"

In August or September, my sister went apple picking and came home with a whole bunch of apples. We originally made about 4 apple pies and managed to eat those in a relatively short period of time. We made four more a while later and ate one and froze the rest. Today we had one of the pies. SO GOOD. I especially liked the pie because the apple pieces were nice and big and chunky. So today's favourite thing was definitely apple pie. This is actually the fourth day in a row that I have had pie of many different varieties* but the pie-y goodness was eclipsed by something else that happened that day. Today, pie is my favourite thing. Not saying that nothing else today was great, the pie was just that good.

Merry Christmas Part 2

As I mentioned yesterday, we spent Christmas Eve at my Aunt and Uncle's house. We had brunch at our house today and it had many of my favourite foods. We don't have much of these foods very often so it was a treat to have them. The food included crepes with whipped cream and strawberries and raspberries, cinnamon buns, regular buns, bacon, sausage and fruit salad. I believe that is everything that I ate although there were some other offerings . Everything (aside from the meat and fruit) was homemade so it had that extra enjoyability factor. We also had copious amounts of Christmas baking which managed to keep me full enough to last until supper time. There were Christmas Tree and Candy Cane cookies, shortbread cookies, some chocolate peanut butter balls, and many other types of cookies. Tomorrow I should probably go back to watching what I eat but today was a good day. Now I just have to try to get to sleep after eating about 10 thousand times the amount of sugar that I should be eating.
I hope everyone had a good Christmas. Good luck with the Boxing week shopping!
